Looking Forward to the 2020 Season
Ynysygerwyn at home! That’s the mouthwatering clash that will launch Cowbridge Cricket Club into the excitement of the South Wales Premier Cricket League.
At the end of the 2019 season, the Neath Valley Club were runners up in Premier Two and they have a long and distinguished record. Established in 1847 they have been finalists in the Village Cup at Lords twice, and won the Dan Radcliffe no fewer than seven times. The danger man is Yuvraj Odera who scored 725 runs last season at an average of 45 and took 31 wickets. It will be a fascinating match which will tell us a lot about where Cowbridge might be when the last few matches are deciding promotion and relegation. What we know is that if there was a betting market Ynysygerwyn would be one of the favourites.
The following week the team will travel to Carmarthen before Penarth visit the Athletic Ground for the first time in a generation. Then comes an away game at Ynystawe, another club who have graced the Lords turf in the Village Cup.
Old rivals Clydach are next up followed by Malpas, Chepstow and Gorseinon. It’s all very exciting and Captain Chris Willey will be looking to have created a platform for a challenge to claim the one promotion place, as theses same opponents make up the second half.
The 2nd XI begin with a visit to Newbridge Fields where they are sure of warm welcome from Bridgend. The other Clubs in Division Two 2nd XI will play are Penarth, Cardiff, Malpas, St Fagans, Newbridge, Newport, Chepstow and Neath. The 2nd XI will reap a reward for the Club being promoted last season as there are some lovely places to play cricket amongst that list.
Captain Chris Willey commented that should his 1st XI team win the Ynysygerwyn match, it would put a real marker down. Lose the game and there are still seventeen fixtures ahead of them. ‘It the best fixture we could have been allocated, bring it on!’ said Chris.
