President's Message

As I sit down to write this, the last
thing I can think of is cricket. The rain is lashing against the
windowpane and it is cold outside – on reflection it is as I expect May to
be! However, by the time you read this message it will be March, Spring
will be with us and the sound of leather on willow will not be far away.
Last season’s exploits on the field are
referred to elsewhere and I think my role here should be to talk about the
support and achievements off the field.
Non playing membership increases year
by year and our sincere thanks go to the Vice Presidents and Members, both
male and female, for their continued support. Attendance at The
President’s Lunch, Lady Members Supper and Annual Dinner continues to
increase to the point where soon we may have to ask the Athletic Club to
build an extension. However, there is no truth in the rumour that tickets
will be sold on E Bay this summer!
We are very grateful to our advertisers,
both old and new, without whose help The Bull would be a financial
disaster.
Straying slightly onto cricket matters I
must say how pleasing it was last year to see youngsters progressing
through the ranks and into the 1st XI where they made valuable
contributions with bat and ball. I am sure more will follow in 2008.
The immediate future of cricket in
Cowbridge looks promising both on and off the field but it can only be
achieved by hard work from the players, committee and junior team
organisers. Younger thinking is always required to mix with the experience
of age. I encourage parents of cricket mad teenagers to support their
children by actively taking part in the running of the Club whilst their
children are involved. I speak from experience when I say it will all be
over far too soon for most – without active parental support soon
Cowbridge Cricket Club will weaken with increasing rapidity. Was it not
President J F Kennedy who said something like “Ask not what your cricket
club can do for you, ask what you ……………”
Enough of the gloom, the sun has just
come out. It will soon be time for the rugbyites mournfully to put away
their boots and pull down their posts. We can now look forward eagerly to
the sharp crack of bat on ball and more days in the sun. The “muddied
oafs” make way for the “flannelled fools”. ROLL ON SUMMER.
