West Wales XI

Following the
disappointing results in 2009, the 2010 season saw considerable progress
and things are looking up for the West Wales XI. The team started the
season with an enormous boost thanks to the installation of the all
weather pitch at the “Old School Field” and in consequence abandoned fewer
matches than any other team in the league although there were one or two
rather damp intermissions. Many people should be thanked for this but it
would not be invidious to single out Hugh Williams who deserves a special
thanks.
There were more consistent
performances from the team culminating in more victories than in previous
years and despite finishing third from bottom out of ten, there was
evidence that progress had been made. We were also deprived of one win due
to a failure of scoring, a particularly annoying event as the team
concerned had no ground and rather than demand full points an alternative
pitch was offered in Cowbridge.
The West Wales XI also had
more draws than any other and though these may not be wins they were a
testament to the determination of the players not to surrender. This
improvement in fortune may have been as a result of a more appropriate
blend of youth and experience. We were delighted to welcome some new, more
senior members such as Ian Evans, Nick Rowland and Philip Webb. These,
along with the regulars of Jon Brazier, Richard Owen and Guy Parker
improved the balance of the side. However, we are very much aware that the
West Wales XI must still be a nursery for promising youngsters such as
Matthew Keating whose bowling skills showed huge promise, the all round
performance of Sean Rowland and the batting efforts of Daniel Evans. In
addition, many other younger players had a few games and we hope they will
have a higher profile next year.
Despite a number of
excellent contributions, Michael Hordley was the foundation on which the
side was built being second in the batting and bowling averages and
whipping on the pads to perform behind the wicket when required. We hope
that out of university term in 2011 he will continue to do so. It was a
promising season and we will all be disappointed if we are not further up
the league table next year.
