Under 13s XI Report

2009 was going to be a difficult season to emulate given the Under 13’s had won The Cardiff and Vale Junior League in 2009 and a number of that team had moved on to the Under 15’s. However, the 2010 squad was blessed with some talented cricketers and many produced some excellent individual performances during the season.

Cai Owen was elected captain and he was ably supported by some of the senior players, namely Jack Griffiths and Ollie Williams.

The Under 13’s first outing was a Cup match at home against a strong Pentyrch team. Despite losing the game by 6 wickets, there were good bowling performances from Zac Summerhayes, Laurie Thomas and Will Gamlin.

The league commenced with an away fixture to Whitchurch. Batting first, the opposition scored 94 for 8 from their 20 overs with Matthew Keating and Cai Evans picking up 2 wickets each. In reply, Cowbridge got off to a relatively slow start and despite a quick fire 25 fro Ollie Williams, Cowbridge were unable to keep up with the run rate and fell 20 runs short.

The following week, we entertained The Vale and a fine display of bowling and fielding was on show by the team. The Vale got off to an excellent start but their progress was curtailed by some superb bowling by Jack Griffiths (4 for 3) and Joseph Russell (2 for 23). Chasing 102 for victory, steady progress was made at the start of the innings but regular loss of wickets meant that The Vale always had their noses in front. However, when things seemed to be all but lost, some excellent hitting from Daniel Evans and Joseph Ricketts put things back in the balance. Still needing 22 runs to win from the final over, Cowbridge were most unfortunate to come up just one run short. A thrilling game and a great team effort.

The first victory for the team came against Sully the following week. Batting first, Cowbridge scored 97 for 9 from their 20 overs with notable contributions from Joseph Ricketts and Sean Rowland. In reply, Sully were bowled out for 69 with Jack Griffiths taking 4 for 9 and Matthew Keating and Cai Owen both taking 2 wickets. In addition, Sam Walter was outstanding behind the stumps letting no byes past.

Unfortunately, this did not lead to continued success as three losses followed. Firstly, Cardiff B chased down a total of 111, winning by 7 wickets, followed by a defeat to Pentyrch by 40 runs and a very heavy defeat to St Fagans by 125 runs. Despite losing these matches, there were excellent performances with bat and ball. Alex Arnot scored 22 runs against Cardiff B and Sean Rowland and Sam Walter both had to retire having passed 30 runs against Pentyrch. With the ball, Laurie Thomas was the pick of the bowlers against Pentyrch and Charlie Pegrum bowled well against St Fagans.

These three loses were followed by an excellent win against Penarth. Bating first, Penarth scored a formidable 139 for 6 in their 20 overs. Rian Thomas was the pick of the bowlers for Cowbridge taking 2 wickets. Cowbridge’s victory was down to a team performance with the bat with all of the top order contributing. Both Sean Rowland and Ollie Williams retired having passed 30 runs and Sam Walter (17) and Zac Summerhayes (19 not out) ensured victory in the final over.

A loss to Cardiff A followed, however there were once again some excellent individual performances. Jacob Cooper, Louisa Knowles and Laurie Thomas all bowled well whilst Daniel Evans and Rian Thomas both passed 30 runs with the bat.

Cowbridge Under 13’s finished the season having won 2 of the 9 games played, not the results we were hoping for at the start of the season. However, we should all be aware that this was a young team and there were some excellent individual performances. With a number of the squad returning to play at this age group in 2011, results should be more favourable.

I would like to thank the whole of the squad who have been a pleasure to work with during the summer. They have all tried hard and have shown significant improvement. In addition, thank you to the parents for providing the taxi service to and from matches and also for providing the very much needed and appreciated vocal support from the boundary.
