The annual
cricket match between Cowbridge 1st XI and the President’s XI
took place on Sunday 1st August. The event has now become the
highlight of the Club’s social calendar and again, the function was sold
out. As in previous years, we were blessed with fine weather and the
President was hopeful that his team would remain undefeated!
The day began
with a pre match Hog Roast lunch, enjoyed by over 100 Vice Presidents and
their guests, accompanied by a great quantity of wine before the players
took to the field.
Fortunately,
the excellent food and wine helped soften the disappointment of defeat for
the President’s XI as the 1st XI beat the President’s men by 29
runs in a very entertaining encounter.

Tom Merilaht
won the toss for the Cowbridge XI and decided to bat. His side then scored
224 runs for 3 wickets. The highlight of the innings was a classy and
faultless batting demonstration from Gareth Boycott Williams-Davies. He
opened the batting and was there at the end of the innings carrying his
bat for 80 not out. In the process he also indulged in another Boycott
trait of running out his fellow batsmen.
Nick Davies
hammered 87 runs in double quick time but, unfortunately, had to retire
through fatigue. Will Haines, quite rightly promoted to number 5 in the
batting order, did not illustrate the captain’s faith in him and also
failed to trouble the scorers.
Iwan Jenkins
took one wicket, while Steve Leeke and Jon Wilks ran out the batsmen with
bullet like throws from the boundary.

After tea it
was the President’s XI’s turn to bat, but they could only muster 195 runs.
Jon Wilks (41), Matthew Phillips (45) and Jack Harris (33) were the
batting stars. Meanwhile Andy Finucane (2-19), Michael Lloyd (3-15) and
Nick Davies, (3-20) took the wickets.
The President,
along with the many Vice Presidents who stayed to the end of the game were
most vocal in their support hoping they could influence the outcome.
Unfortunately, this was not to be as the President’s XI suffered their
first defeat in 5 years.
The game was
once again played in an excellent spirit and thank you to all those who
took part, particularly to those who travelled considerable distances to
represent the President’s XI.
Many thanks
also to those who attended the lunch and gave their support. In addition,
thanks to those who assisted in different capacities to make the day such
a great success particularly Gaynor Smart and her catering assistants
along with the wine sellers.
