President's Lunch

President's XI
The annual
cricket match between Cowbridge 1st XI and the President’s XI
took place on Sunday 9th August. The event has now become the
highlight of the Club’s social calendar and again, the function was sold
out. As in previous years, we were blessed with fine weather and an
excellent game of cricket culminating in yet another victory for the
President’s men – they remain undefeated!
The day began
with a pre match Hog Roast lunch, enjoyed by over 90 Vice Presidents and
their guests, accompanied by a great quantity of wine before the players
took to the field.
The President’s
XI won the toss and elected to field on what appeared to be a good batting
wicket. Andrew Finucane and the flamboyant Michael Lloyd opened the
batting but got off to a relatively slow start due to the accurate bowling
of Matthew Smart. The pair put on 59 for the first wicket before Finucane
was dismissed by Huw Beaverstock. Will Haines, promoted from his usual
position at number 11, joined Lloyd and whilst Haines struggled to hit the
ball off the square, Lloyd accelerated his scoring. The pair put on a
further 54 before Haines perished, also to Beaverstock.
The loss off
Haines prompted a batting collapse (not untypical of the 1st
XI) as a further 5 wickets were lost for the addition of only 26 runs.
However, a telling contribution of 45 by Richard Finucane and 16 not out
by Arvind Singhal saw the 1st XI reach a total of 214 from
their 45 overs. Whilst the free flowing scoring by Lloyd and Richard
Finucane had raised a reasonable amount of vocal support from the partisan
crowd, the biggest cheer was brought about when young Matthew Keating
(Under 11’s) making his debut for the 1st XI, scored his first
run in senior cricket; a moment both he and his farther will remember for
a long time to come.
In reply,
Cowbridge 1st XI got off to a reasonable start with both Jon
Smart and Huw Beaverstock looking to be positive. However Smart was
dismissed early and he was soon followed back to the pavilion by Jack
Harris. Matt Smart and Beaverstock put on 43 for the third wicket before
Smart was dismissed, by a sharply rising ball from the pace of Rhydian
Harris, with the score on 93. When the fourth wicket fell in the 24th
over with the score on 110, the game was finally balanced. However, Alex
Jones and the ever reliable Jonty Webb steadied the ship, taking the score
to 204 before Jones was dismissed for an excellent 68 runs. Despite losing
Alex Krunka, Webb and young Gethin Davies obtained the required 6 runs
from the final over that saw the President’s XI to victory by 3 wickets
with three balls to spare.
The President,
along with the many Vice Presidents who stayed to the end of the game were
most vocal in their support which was no doubt a contributing factor to
the result!
The game was
once again played in an excellent spirit and thank you to all those who
took part, particularly to those who travelled considerable distances to
represent the President’s XI.
Many thanks
also to those who attended the lunch and gave their support. In addition,
thanks to those who assisted in different capacities to make the day such
a great success particularly Gaynor Smart and her catering assistants
along with the wine sellers.
