President's Lunch, 10th June

Cowbridge 1st XI’s annual fixture against The President’s XI took place on Sunday 10th June. The day began with a pre match Hog Roast lunch for about 100 Vice Presidents and their guests which was accompanied by an excellent selection (and a great quantity) of fine wine!

Cowbridge won the toss and elected to bat first. Despite some accurate bowling opening batsmen Huw Beaverstock and Jack Harris got off to an excellent start. The pair entertained the crowd with an array of excellent shots putting on 59 for the first wicket before Harris was dismissed in the 10th over for 19. Mike Lloyd joined Beaverstock and put on a further 93 before Lloyd was caught for an excellent 48 runs that included 6 fours and 2 sixes, one into the spectators who were now enjoying the sun, and more importantly the wine, on the patio!

With 20 overs remaining and already a competitive total reached the middle order had licence to entertain the crowd. Alex Tunnadine made a quick 21 and Andy Daniels and Elliot Street also made contributions to a total of 275 for 6 from 40 overs. The star of the Cowbridge innings however was Beaverstock. His personal score of 108 included 13 fours, 4 sixes and a smashed pavilion window. When he was finally dismissed he rightly deserved a standing ovation from the well lubricated spectators.

In reply The President’s XI attacked from the outset. Openers Andrew Finucane and Owen Ruttley set about the Cowbridge bowlers and put on 45 for the first wicket. The shots were slightly less cultured than those shown by the Cowbridge batsmen but were just as effective! Andrew Thomas (71) and Mark Walton (42) both batted well and kept The President’s XI in with a fighting chance but when both perished in the search for quick runs only a further contribution of 37 from Freddie John was forthcoming and Cowbridge secured victory by 30 runs.

Despite the reasonably comfortable victory, the game was thoroughly entertaining and played in the right spirit. It was an excellent day all round and thank you to all those who took part, particularly to those who travelled some distance to represent The President’s XI.

Many thanks also to those who attended the lunch and gave their support. In addition thanks to those who assisted in different capacities to make the day such a great success particularly Gaynor Smart and her catering assistants along with Amanda and Becky for their assistance in wine selling!
