1840 CUP
Cowbridge CC –v- Bridgend Town CC
The 1840 Cup has been a long standing
fixture between Cowbridge Cricket Club and Bridgend Town Cricket Club. The
annual event is eagerly awaited as the two Clubs have the opportunity to
“get one over” on their local rivals. However with the increasing
pressures on peoples’ time it was decided that the traditional format of
the 1840 Cup in 2007 would be amended to fall in line with the 21st
Century and Twenty20 cricket was introduced to the Athletic Ground.

The
format of the day was a youth Twenty20 match as a curtain raiser to the
main event played between the two first XI’s. A BBQ was prepared for the
enthusiastic crowd along with a large paddling pool for the children!
Bridgend Youth won the toss and elected
to bat first. The opening batsmen attacked from the outset and despite
losing an early wicket raced to 36 from the first four overs. The
introduction of the two spinners, Nick Davies and Will Haines slowed the
run rate and after 10 overs Bridgend had reached 61 for 4. An excellent 58
from Adam Weaver and 32 by James Townhby helped Bridgend post a
competitive total of 154 for 6 from their 20 overs.
In reply Cowbridge set about the target
in aggressive fashion. Both Mike Lloyd and Jack Harris ran well between
the wickets picking up singles whilst punishing the bad ball to the
boundary. The pair put on 61 for the first wicket before Harris was
dismissed for 21. Adam Wood joined Lloyd and continued the onslaught,
adding a further 53 before Wood was bowled for 37. Despite losing two
quick wickets, captain Mike Lloyd (56*), assisted by Elliot Street (15*)
ensured Cowbridge secured victory with four overs to spare. An excellent
start to the day for Cowbridge. Could the 1st XI produce the
same result?

Cowbridge
1st XI won the toss and elected to bat first. Beaverstock was
dismissed in the first over and both Andy Daniels and Mike Harrison found
run scoring difficult against accurate bowling and a wicket that offered
no pace or bounce. The pair added just 18 before Daniels was dismissed and
when he was soon followed by Mike Lloyd, Cowbridge were struggling at 29
for 3. Andrew Finucane tried to hit Cowbridge out of trouble and made a
quick 13 before another batting collapse occurred leaving the home side 60
for 8. Elliot Street (20*) and Stuart Morton (18*) batted sensibly during
the remaining overs enabling Cowbridge to reach a below par score of 103
from their 20 overs.
In reply, Bridgend got off to a poor
start losing two wickets in the first two overs. However the early wickets
did not result in capitulation as the middle order batted sensibly,
picking up singles regularly on a wicket that was now very difficult to
bat on. A partnership of 25 for the third wicket followed by one of 40 for
the fourth wicket saw Bridgend Town progress to 67 from 14 overs. The game
was now very much in the balance and when Cowbridge picked up four wickets
in relatively quick succession, the result could have gone either way.
However, with 5 runs required from the final over, Cowbridge were unable
to restrict the opposition and Bridgend were victorious by 2 wickets with
just 1 ball remaining.
Both games were played in excellent
spirit and the new format certainly appealed to the players and the
spectators. The Twenty20 format may be here for some time yet and there
may even be music and coloured clothing in 2008 !
